THE current controversy vis-à-vis the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi’s (BIEK) exam results raises many doubts about our exam system all over the country. A political party has charged that a large number of students have been wrongly failed and that this should be probed by an independent body. The fact is that an honest investigation is warranted to expose the farce our public sector examinations have become.

ONE plus one equals two. But in extraordinary situations, one plus one can produce infinite results. That is how it is with the Batch of 1979 of the Dow Medical College. Comprising 435 students at a time when Dow was the only medical college in Karachi and the city was torn by strife, which devastated all educational institutions, it was a wonder that the Batch of ’79 turned out to be what it is.

ایک جمع ایک دو کے برابر ہوتا ہے لیکن غیر معمولی حالات میں ایک اورایک بے حساب نتائج پیدا کر سکتا ہے۔ کچھ ایسا ہی احوال ڈاؤ میڈیکل کالج کی 1979 کی جماعت کا ہے۔ مذکورہ جماعت 435 طلباء پر مشتمل تھی ۔اس جماعت نے ایسی کامیابیاں حاصل کیں جو ایک خوشگوار احساس دلاتی ہیں ۔ اس وقت کراچی میں یہی واحد میڈیکل کالج تھا ۔ یہ وہ دور تھا جب کراچی شہر سیاسی و سماجی تنازعات کی لپیٹ میں تھا ۔

ACCORDING to the UNDP, nearly 29 per cent of Pakistan’s population is between 15 and 29 years of age. This constitutes the youth bulge. It is to be attributed to our very high population growth rate of 2.55pc. In demographic terms, ours is a young country. There was a time when the youth bulge was celebrated as an asset that would change our destiny. That never happened. Today, the youth bulge has emerged as a challenge.
