MUNA Khan’s interesting column titled ‘Forego the FOGO’ (fear of getting old) published recently on these pages was food for thought. She is spot on, especially in her observation that FOGO is driven by the global beauty industry. Muna also writes about seniors in the newsroom today not being valued for their experience. This is probably the consequence of glorifying youth to create FOGO.

حال ہی میں شائع ہونے والا موناخان کا دلچسپ کالم(FOGO: Fear of getting old) “Forego the FOGO”تھا۔جس میں بہت کچھ قابلِ فکر تھا۔خاص کر موناخان کا یہ کہنا کہ بڑھاپے کا خوف پروان چڑھانے میں آرائشِ حسن و زیبائش کاسامان بنانے والوں کا کردار بہت اہم ہے۔یہ شاید اس وجہ سے ہے کہ نوعمری کو ہمیشہ سراہا گیا ہے۔ مونا آج نیوز روم میں معمرحضرات کے بارے میں لکھتے ہوئی کہتی ہیں کہ ان کے تجربے کی قدر نہیں کی جاتی۔ نوجوانی کی دادوتحسین ہی FOGOکی تخلیق کا سبب بنا ہے۔

PAKISTAN is not famous for its reading culture. Few people read books and the publishing industry has never flourished here as in other countries where books sell by the millions. But we shouldn’t be surprised. After all, education is also in the doldrums in Pakistan and the co-relationship between the two is obvious.

پاکستان کے لوگوں میں مطالعہ کا رواج عام نہیں ہے۔ بہت کم لوگ کتابیں پڑھتے ہیں یہی وجہ ہے کہ یہاں اشاعت کی صنعت ترقی نہیں کرسکی ہے جبکہ دوسرے ممالک میں کروڑوں کی تعداد میں کتب فروخت ہوتی ہیں ۔پاکستان میں تعلیمی نظام بھی زبوں حالی کا شکار ہے ۔چونکہ تعلیم اور مطالعہ دونوں ہی کا چولی دامن کا ساتھ ہے ۔جب تعلیمی ماحول ہی نہ ہوتو مطالعہ کا رحجان کیسے ہو۔
According to UNICEF data, close to 23 million children of ages between 5-16 do not go to school. The main reason for this is poverty. At the same time most of the education that is currently offered in a majority of public schools, many private schools, and madrassas, is below par. Many thinking Pakistanis realize that this state of affairs can offer only a dismal future to the children of today.
Since the problem of poverty can only be solved by the efforts of competent and dedicated politicians in power, this paper does not offer any solution for it.
The suggestions given below aim at improving education for those children who go to school, but do not receive quality education. Even most of school going children in Pakistan come from underprivileged families, and many are undernourished and ill-fed.
