PAKISTAN: A Hard Country, by Anatole Lieven, was published in 2011. Thirteen years later, Pakistan is a ‘harder’ country still. But not everyone here is aware that the hardships, like our wealth, are not spread evenly. We tend to analyse our economic problems in financial terms. But hardship also has a human face and confronts psychosocial challenges, which the better off fail to notice.

اناٹول لیوین کی کتاب Pakistan: A Hard Countryسال 2011 میں شائع ہوئی ۔اس اشاعت کےتیرہ سال بعد پاکستان اب بھی ایک ‘دشوار’ ملک ہے۔لگتا ہے کہ یہاں ہر کوئی اس حقیقت سے واقف نہیں ہے کہ دولت کی تقسیم کی طرح مشکلات بھی غیر مساوی طور پر بٹی ہوئی ہیں ۔ہم اپنے اقتصادی مسائل کا تجزیہ مالی لحاظ سے کرتے ہیں لیکن مشکلات کاایک روپ انسانی چہرہ بھی ہوتا ہے جوسماجی نفسیاتی خطرات کا سامنا کرتا ہے۔ جس پر صاحبِ دولت توجہ ہی نہیں دینا چاہتے۔

HOW safe a place is Pakistan for young women? According to the human rights ministry, in the last three years, 63,000 cases of violence against women were reported here. This is a rough estimate as not every case of violence is brought to public notice. In fact, it is just the tip of the iceberg.

HERE comes yet another attempt at kick-starting a public discourse on the most neglected issue in Pakistan: public sector education. This time the initiative has been taken by Nargis Rahman, the dynamic head of the Pakistan Women’s Foundation for Peace, which has launched a series of seminars on the subject. Two meetings have been held so far, with one more scheduled.
