پاکستان میں خواتین کی تحریک نے اپنے آغاز سے اب تک ایک طویل سفر طے کیا ہے۔ ان تحریکوں نے اپنی جدوجہدکے دوران خواتین کے بنیادی انسانی حقوق اور ان کو بااختیار بنانے پر توجہ مرکوز کرتے ہوئے مختلف شکلیں اور حکمت ِعملی اختیار کی ہے۔ البتہ اس تمام جہد میں جو چیز نمایاں طور پر غائب رہی وہ خواتین کی جنسیت کا موضوع تھی۔ پاکستان کے قدامت پسند اور تنازعات سے بھرے ماحول میں عوامی سطح پر بات کرنے کے لیے یہ ایک حساس مسئلہ رہاہے۔

Jail him; hang him; disqualify him — until disqualified by its vote-bank the party’s leader remains the party leader. Such has been Pakistan’s political experience. And the shifting parliamentary reps – whosoever’s hand they may be moving into or letting go of – retain their individual personal weight: A gold standard electable has his own constituency and carries it as personal baggage. Such is the feudal and religious tradition.

RECENTLY, at a history conference on academic freedom held at SZABIST, a session was devoted to analysing the culture of silence that has come to prevail in our academia. It was attributed to the penchant of the powers that be to clamp down on the free expression of opinion by scholars who want to expose the unpleasant truths of our history. If they choose to defy censorship guidelines, the consequences can be dire for them.
